Relation Between Intraocular Pressure Lowering Effects of Topical Brimonidine and Alpha 2 Receptor Polymorphism Topical brimonidine is a recently introduced alpha 2 receptor agonist which is used in the therapy of intraocular pressure (IOP) reduction in patients with open angle glaucoma. Although adequate IOP reduction is achieved in many patients there is a considerable degree of variability in IOP reduction among subjects. The reason for this interindividual variability is not entirely clear. Obviously differences in pharmacokinetic properties due to variable penetration of the drug through the cornea may be responsible. Alternatively, polymorphisms of the alpha-2 receptor may account for the differences in IOP-lowering efficacy of topical brimonidine. This hypothesis is tested in the present study. Polymorphisms of the alpha-2 receptor have been described in a number of previous studies. In addition, polymorphisms in the alpha-2 receptor gene have been shown to be functionally important, particularly a polymorphism of the alpha-2B receptor, which has a high allele frequency in caucasians.

Comparison of Rebif Compared to Tecifdera on Six-month Outcomes in Patients With Relapsing-remitting MS To compare two commonly used MS medications, IFN β-1a subcutaneous three times per week (Rebif) and oral twice daily dimethyl fumarate (Tecfidera), on mean number of new or enlarging T2 lesions at 6 months in adults with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis who are prescribed these medications and receive a 6 month MRI scan as standard of care.

Surgical Correction of Astigmatism Laser correction for myopia and astigmatism using an excimer laser has been performed with success for several years. During the last 2 years, a new method for correction of refractive errors has emerged. In the method (ReLex) a femtosecond laser is used to cut a lenticule in the corneal stroma that is subsequently removed. For simple myopia this method has proved effective and on par with excimer baser LASIK. However, it remains to be determined if ReLEx is as effective in the treatment of astigmatism. In the study, patients with high astigmatism are treated with conventional LASIK for astigmatism in one eye and with ReLEx for astigmatism in the other.

Palifermin in Preventing Oral Mucositis Caused by Chemotherapy and/or Radiation Therapy in Young Patients Undergoing Stem Cell Transplant RATIONALE: Palifermin may help relieve or prevent oral mucositis caused by chemotherapy and radiation therapy in young patients undergoing stem cell transplant. PURPOSE: This randomized phase II trial is studying palifermin to see how well it works compared with a placebo in preventing oral mucositis caused by chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy in young patients undergoing stem cell transplant.

Omega 3 Fatty Acids and Atrial Fibrillation Unlike for ventricular arrhythmias, the role of n-3 PUFAs in atrial arrhythmias has not been fully investigated. A recently published epidemiological study reported that in elderly patients, consumption of fish was associated with a lower incidence of atrial fibrillation over the 12 years of follow-up. This observation may be an indirect effect due to the overall beneficial effort of fish consumption on reducing ischaemic heart disease, however this association persisted after adjustment for confounding characteristics. Clinical data regarding the direct impact of n-3 PUFAs on atrial arrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation/flutter (AF) is lacking. However, as both INa and ICa-L are also in atrial myocytes, similar anti-fibrillatory actions by n-3PUFAs would be expected in atrial fibrillation and we would like to investigate this further. The primary aim of this study is to investigate whether dietary supplements of n-3 PUFA concentrates (1g fish oil/day comprising eicosapentaenoic acid, EPA 46% and docosahexaenoic, DHA 38%)) helps maintain sinus rhythm after cardioversion to normal sinus rhythm in patients with persistent atrial fibrillation.
